  1. During high school my art class made the trip to the dock on many days to draw and paint. I still have a sketch somewhere that I drew of this ship. Although it was at the Public Dock for several years, many people do not remember it.

I remember the boat. My uncle and aunt went on a cruise. Do you happen to know if this is the same ship that Lou Porreco bought and it ended up sinking off Buffalo, NY?

  3. Yes it is, however it sank after public auction to the Seafearers International Union, which used it as a training vessel. It went down while under tow 25 miles northeast of the Nantucket Light, Sept. 4, 1967 in the squalls preceding Hurricane Doria.

In July 2006, a research team aboard Quest Marine‚Äôs R/V Quest located the “North American” close to the edge of the continental shelf, approximately 140 miles (230 km) off the New England coast in 250 feet (76 m) of water.
